In the beginning …

It started in the autumn of 2015.  I wanted to visit German city of Moenchengladbach to watch a football game (why else?). I looked on the map and saw it was only 150 miles from Rotterdam ferry port and thought to myself, “I could cycle that”.  So, I bought some panniers and attached them to my Claud Butler hybrid bike, enlisted my much younger and fitter nephew, parked the car at Hull, rode on to the ferry, and rode off the other side. We took two days, stopping the first night in Nuenen, a small town just past Eindhoven.  We spent the next night in Germany drinking beer and watching football, before getting a train back to Rotterdam the following day, where we did the same, minus the football.

The following year we repeated the trip. This time in late November / early December, and cycling both ways. For this trip, I had invested in a Ridgeback touring bike.

In the summer of 2017, we extended things a little further, cycling 500 miles on a circuit from Rotterdam to Zeebrugge through Holland, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and France.    It was quite a trip.

So, in 2018, I’ll be setting off again – this time on my own – and riding 800 miles from Santander to Cherbourg.

Training starts on Boxing Day.
